New projects

In the initial period of the CO2 performance ladder certification, AVR is focusing on the following challenging projects.

Capturing CO2 in the chimney

In Duiven a study was conducted in 2014 and 2015 where CO2 was captured on a small scale and its quality assessed in laboratories for possible reuse. The goal was to reduce our CO2 emissions and check whether the CO2 qualifies for reutilisation. The study arrived at a positive conclusion: the clean CO2 gas is suitable for use in greenhouse farming and industry.

Capturing CO2 and recycling it is a direct way to reduce our CO2 emissions and one that brings us closer to zero waste, by using even this last residual material. AVR is enthusiastic about the results and right now is working to scale up the process. It is expected that the new technology will be built in 2017 and in 2018 it is anticipated that the first 50,000 tonnes of CO2 will be captured per year.

If successful, this will be extended to Rozenburg and even higher emission reductions will be attained.

 

Replacement of e-motors

In both Duiven and Rozenburg over the coming years various E-motors, such as the river water pump, will be replaced by more energy-efficient variants. Ultimately in Duiven the combustion air motors (such as the LUCO and the condenser) will also be replaced.
For AVR Rozenburg a feasibility study should lead to a step-by-step plan for replacing larger e-motors (>100kW).

 

Driving and sailing with less fuel

For the driving and sailing equipment, fuel can be saved by applying the principle of ´The New Driving´ and ´The New Sailing´.

We are also looking into possibilities for using a track & trace system to optimise transport movements.

 

Green electricity at the transshipment stations

Savings can be achieved on the electricity consumption of the transshipment stations by using our own green electricity (from Duiven or Rozenburg) instead of purchasing grey power. Green electricity is generated in a CO2-neutral manner. We are also looking into further energy reduction measures at various transshipment stations.

 

New low-energy lighting

In Duiven, HPL lamps can be replaced by HPi lamps in the MLC storage shed. It is expected that 55,500 kWh will be saved in this way. The lighting in the warehouse is being replaced by LED lighting in 2016, pulp and slags hall in 2017 and the dumping platform in 2018.

 In Rozenburg, a lighting plan is being drawn up for the introduction of LED lighting.
